    The next generation of solid-state illumination is here. InLumencor’s SPECTRA III light engine, eight individuallyaddressable solid-state light sources deliver unprecedentedperformance. Each color band provides on the orderof a half a watt of optical power at the end of a liquidlight guide. The constituent light sources include LEDs,Lumencor’s proprietary luminescent light pipes and lasers.The outputs of the sources are refi ned by bandpass fi ltersand merged into a common optical train directed to thelight output port on the front panel. The light output porthas a built-in adapter for connection to microscopes andother bioanalytical instruments through a standard, 3mmdiameter liquid light guide, LLG.

    ASSAY-SPECIFIC LIGHTING FOR CALCIUM RATIO IMAGING
    Lumencor’s RETRA FURA light engine is the ideal lightsource for 340/380 nm fl uorescence ratio imagingcalcium using fura-2. Imaging of intracellular calciumhas long been an important technique in cell biology,neuroscience and related fi elds. Excitation ratio imagingcompensates for variations of indicator dye concentrationwithin cells and between cells that might be erroneouslyinterpreted as calcium level changes. Fura-2 is thepreferred indicator dye for Ca2+ ratio imaging.
